Guest post: Budget Field Trips

Today I have a Guest post for you, and it's a good one!

Budget Field Trips

By Kristl of The Budget Diet

Plan a field trip every week this summer! Here’s how…

Start by taking your children to the library to find some books about your town. When we first moved to Houston, we discovered a book called “147 Fun Things To Do In Houston”…this was our go-to guide for summer fun!

Do a simple web search: free things to do in (my city). You’ll be amazed what comes up!

Let each child make a list of what they would like to see & do! Set a budget limit!

Think beyond museums and amusement parks…think budget friendly fun like: a visit to the farmer’s market, berry picking, check out different area playgrounds & rate them, take a tour of an area factory, see a free
outdoor concert or play, take a hike or be a tourist in your own town.

Pack a picnic lunch wherever you go to keep your field trip budget friendly.

Let me know where your field trips take you this summer!

TheBudgetDiet is a diet for your wallet...not your waistline!  Money saving tips are posted everyday!

What are you toting this summer (giveaway)

Tuesday, June 29, 2010

What are you toting this summer?

I'm hopefully going to the beach soon, and you know that you have to have a tote bag when you go to the beach!

Dress Barn and MS&L sent me the tote bag above and a $25 gift card to Dress Barn for me to fill my tote with my summer must-haves. Dresses are wonderful for summertime and are quick but painless! And they come in some great colors and styles, so I knew that was what I wanted to fill my tote with!

MS&L sent me a coupon for my purchase (which is below and you can print out) and I bought the following dresses. (I might post a pic of me in them...someday!)

This is my favorite! I love the colors on it!

This was the first dress I chose and I LOVED how it looked on me and the colors and it would have been perfect for an event in NYC that I'm supposed to be at right now... so I was convinced to buy them both! Dress Barn had dresses, buy 2 get $10 off, so I saved some money by using the coupon and by using two!

So, what are you toting this summer? Kid's toys? Baby bottles? Sunscreen, a laptop, and a cell phone?

Tell us and you can win one of the totes above! Colors available:
  • Pink
  • Blue
  • Green
  • Yellow
First, here's the coupon you can use to get 20% off of any purchase, but since I'm slacking a little bit, the coupon expires tomorrow (6/30) but if you're planning on going shopping, then hurry and print this coupon and go shopping!

(click the photo to get the coupon full size, then print to your printer)

GIVEAWAY

One of you will win one of these super cute totes to fill with your summer must-haves!

To enter, tell me Where will you be toting your tote this summer? (Required entry)

For extra entries, please view my Giveaway Rules, updated 5/12/10.

This giveaway will end on  July 13, 2010. Winner will be announced in a blog post here at A Simple Kinda Life and will be emailed, so please be sure to leave your email address in your comment.

Thanks for entering, and good luck!

Live in style in your Yoursphere condo

I'm a little behind on my Yoursphere posts, but the good news is that the posting period has been extended. I hope to have my last post up within the next few days.

My daughter was also grounded for a time, so the computer was off limits to her.

At any rate, we've completed our Yoursphere "assignments" and I'm going to share the next to last one with you.

We were instructed to have our child create a condo within Yoursphere, which she had already done on a previous occasion. Here's a photo of her condo:

That little chick up there is her online persona. Isn't she cool?!

There's so much that she can do on Yoursphere, like visiting a hair salon, buy clothes, and visit a movie theater. There's also games, a wide variety of them too! She can also have her online self work at the Coffee House!

The best part? I feel secure because I know that this is a kid's-only site! Yoursphere's parental controls are top notch, and I can keep track of what she's doing, and who she's friends with.

We are a Yoursphere family.

Interested in trying out Yoursphere with your kids? Use the code YSMC-0061 to register!

Disclaimer: I wrote this review while participating in the Yoursphere Test Drive program by Mom Central on behalf of Yoursphere. I received a free lifetime Gold membership on Yoursphere.com, Yoursphere t-shirts, and a $50 American Express gift card to facilitate my review.

Learning to not over-extend myself

Full Plate Pictures, Images and Photos

In the past couple of months, but most recently, the last two weeks, my plate has been so full that I'm stressed out and unsure where I have left off here on my blog.

I have over-extended myself, even though I tell myself time and time again, that I won't.

It could be a little part that my email fills up so quickly and I feel overburdened. I need to learn to just read what I need right away, then post what I need to post, then go back to email when I've fulfilled all of my committments.

It also could be something called The Sims 3 that is keeping me from doing "work".

It might also have something to do with raising two kids in the summertime, looking for work, supplementing my income until I find work, drama that pops up occasionally that physically and emotionally drains me, and it might even be stress.

All in all, I'm trying to get better. I'm at a place I've never been before in my life, and I'm still learning to deal with life's little challenges and accept what comes.

It's still not any easier.

Bear with me, friends.

And send chocolate. Dove, preferably. :-)

Thank You Mom Reunion contest: voting ends 6/30

Back in May, I told you about the P&G Thank You Mom contest, and how you could win a trip to see your mom as well as a video camera to record the memories.

I told how I wish I had known about this contest a long time ago, before my mother passed away, but since I didn't, I'm hoping that you will go visit the site and vote for your favorite entrant.

About the Thank You Mom Reunion contest:

  • Proctor & Gamble continues to celebrate moms everywhere with "Thank You Mom Reunions", a nationwide contest to reunite Moms and their children for milestone family moments like graduations and birthdays they otherwise might have missed.

  • “Thank You Mom Reunions” will bring together 105 moms with their children, who are unable to do so on their own.  (15 per month for a 10 month campaign.)

  • Since Mother's Day, participants have been submitting their stories online to be considered for a reunion with their mom or mother figure for the June contest.  Thirty finalists have been selected and consumers will choose the 15 winners.

  • Winners will receive a $1000 travel voucher and portable digital video camera to capture their reunion and are encouraged to share the video on ThankYouMom.com

Voting ends at 11:59:59 June 30th (2 days from now!) and you can vote once a day.  Please vote for your favorite before Wednesday night!

Disclaimer: I was not compensated in any manner for sharing this contest and the voting details with my readers, but as a member of One 2 One Network, I received free product samples and have the chance to win a gift card via random drawing.

Start your summer with a trip to Branson, Missouri

This is a Sponsored Post written by me on behalf of Hiltons of Branson. All opinions are 100% mine.

I don't have the money to travel, but if I did, Branson, Missouri, would surely be on my list of places to visit this summer.

There's so many things to do in Branson, from their new 110 store shopping center (Branson Landing) to 18-holes of Championship Golf at The Payne Stewart Golf Club, there's something for everyone!

Personally, I'm not into golf, so I'd have to check out the Convention Center, the outlet mall, Branson Landing, Silver Dollar City, Lake Taneycomo, and the Theatre district.

The hotel I would stay at is the Hilton Branson Convention Center Hotel, which is minutes from every attraction I mentioned above. It has 294 guest rooms, suites, and condos in a glass tower that is breathtaking. I would be able to surf the net in my room, using their workstation and their wireless service! Their workstations feature granite countertops and ergonomic desk chairs. Even the 32-inch LCD TV would be calling my name!

The hotel even has a fitness center, an indoor pool, a hot tub, and an outdoor pool. I would never have to leave this hotel for anything!

The Hilton Branson Convention Center Hotel even has a wide variety of packages to choose from. From the Hilton Bed and Breakfast package to the Golf Package, you're sure to score a deal!

The Hilton Promenade at Branson Landing is located on Lake Taneycomo and is another viable option. It's located in downtown Branson and is across from the Hilton Branson Convention Center Hotel. It has great views of the lake and downtown! The Promenade has the same packages that I mentioned above, as well as a Romance Package that would be great!

What would you do in Branson, Missouri?

Review and Giveaway: Touch'd Bath and Body (with discount code)

I'm so excited to bring you this review! I've been following the owner of Touch'd Bath and Body (Rachel Ferrucci) on Twitter for ages now, and was always interested in trying out her products, but I never asked! I was recently given an opportunity to be a part of the Touch'd launch, by doing a review of her yummy Sugar Scrub, and by giving away a product to one of you!

About Touch'd:

Touch'd bath and body was founded Rachel Ferrucci, when she couldn't find products to meet all the needs of her family. One product specifically, the organic sugar scrub, was created when her daughter had eczema and the doctors were prescribing medicated creams that seemed to be drying out her skin. She wanted to give her daughter relief without slopping medicated creams all over her delicate body. She researched and read every book on natural oils and how they can benefit our skin. She was successful in concocting the winning formulas in her home bathtub by making a product that was 100% organic and alleviated her eczema.

Other signature items in the Touch’d women’s product line include Bath Butter, Moisture Myst, and the Foaming Salt Soak, which is derived from the Dead Sea. The men’s line (inspired by her husband) includes the scents Outlaw and Captain.

Along with creating Touch'd her my family, She also wanted to meet the needs of discriminating women everywhere.

Finding Touch’d

Touch’d products can be purchased on the Touch’d website (www.touchd.net) and in select boutiques, salons, and day spas throughout Connecticut.

Connect with Touch'd on the following Social Media Platforms:

My thoughts

I was sent the Sugar Scrub to try out, and since I have tried out other sugar scrubs, I was definitely ready to try out Touch'd's brand and compare! I must admit, I love the feel of Rachel's sugar scrub better, as well as the smell. The scent is intoxicating!

Sugar Scrub is a great exfoliant, and works on every part of the body. It's especially nice on the feet, but I use it everywhere! Body, face, and feet - sugar scrub works great on all body parts because it opens the pores and gets your circulation going.

I can't wait to try out more products by Touch'd! My skin is so soft after using the sugar scrub and is great after a shave! I love this stuff!

You can try out Touch'd for yourself, if you don't want to wait to see if you win, by using the following code:
Simple - good for 25% off - valid until July 15th

One of you will win an Organic Moisture Myst from Touch'd!

To enter, visit Touch'd and tell me about another product you would like to try, or a scent that you would like to try!

New post up on my Personal Blog

Tuesday, June 22, 2010

I haven't been updating my personal blog that often, because, well, it's just hard enough updating THIS blog and getting through my emails most days. My mind is so overrun with stress and things that I need to do but also the depression that is taking a firm hold of me, that it's almost hard to do anything anymore. I appreciate those of you who have been in my corner, because, to be honest, even my real life friends are barely in my corner anymore, and Lord knows it would be too much to ask for my family to care.

I put up a new post on my private blog, Job hunting sucks, titled that because it DOES! I still can't believe that I don't have a job - I have over 16 years experience in clerical work and I have a clearance from the government! I keep praying and I don't know what God's plan is for us but I really wish this plan would take hold soon because I NEED to get a place before school starts at the end of August!

Prayers and friends are always welcome here.

*Remember, if you haven't asked for access to my Private Blog, you won't be able to see the post in the link above. Request access if you want to read my innermost thoughts, which I only share about once a month. :-(

Flowers help you let that someone special know you are thinking about them

This is a Sponsored Post written by me on behalf of 1-800-Flowers. All opinions are 100% mine.

Do you ever have someone on your mind? Someone that you would love to see but can't right now? Flowers are a great way to let that someone special know that you are on their mind.

It could be a secret crush, your best friend, a past love, your spouse or significant other, or a family member. You can let them know you are thinking of them with a quick 1-800-Flowers flower delivery!

If I had the money to send flowers, I might send flowers to my grandfather, who lives in Washington State. I'd send him some flowers because he's always been there for me, and although no one will take my mother's place, when I need someone to talk to about just about anything, I know that if I call my Grandpa, he will always lend his ear and be supportive. Plus, Father's Day was just the other day, and since I'm currently out of work, I didn't have any money to send him anything. I'd love to show him how I appreciate him adopting and raising my mother when he and my grandmother got divorced. He did a great job!

Who would you send flowers to? Visit 1800Flowers.com and send flowers to that special someone who's been on your mind!

HawthoRNe premieres tonight, June 22nd, on TNT

HAWTHORNE – One-hour drama series
·         Season 2 coming June 22nd
Jada Pinkett Smith returns this summer for a second season as Christina Hawthorne, an impassioned Chief Nursing Officer, in TNT’s medical drama.  This year, Christina will undergo some of the biggest challenges of her career as she faces the possibility of the doors of Richmond Trinity closing permanently.  Joining Pinkett Smith in HAWTHORNE is Michael Vartan (Alias) as Dr. Tom Wakefield, the oncologist who treated Christina’s husband and who serves as director of medicine for the hospital.  The cast also includes Suleka Mathew (Men in Trees) as Bobbie Jackson, the head ER nurse and one of Hawthorne’s best friends; David Julian Hirsh (Lovebites) as Ray Stein, a nurse struggling with being accepted in a female-dominated profession; Christina Moore (90210) as Candy Sullivan, a nurse with a strong sense of duty; and Hannah Hodson (TNT’s The Ron Clark Story) as Camille, Hawthorne’s daughter.

In its first season, HAWTHORNE averaged 4 million viewers and ranked as ad-supported cable’s #1 Tuesday program among households and women 25-54.

I have always loved Jada Pinkett Smith and love this show! I'll definitely be tuning in tonight to watch this great show!

Check out the TNT HawthoRNe site to see a sneak peek of tonight's episode, view photos, and watch Behind the Scenes videos.

Leverage Season 3 began June 20, 2010

LEVERAGE – One-hour drama series
·         Season 3 began June 20
One of television’s hottest series returns with Academy Award winner Timothy Hutton (Ordinary People) as the head of a team of con artists who exact revenge against those who use power and wealth to victimize people.  His highly skilled team includes Sophie Devereaux (Gina Bellman – Coupling), a grifter who uses her acting skills to corner her marks; Eliot Spencer (Christian Kane – TNT’s Into the West), a “retrieval specialist” with bone-crunching fighting skills; Alec Hardison (Aldis Hodge – Friday Night Lights), a gadget and technology wizard who keeps the team connected and informed; and Parker (Beth Riesgraf – Alvin and the Chipmunks), a slightly off-center thief adept at repelling off buildings or squeezing into tight places.  Together, the team puts their energy, quick minds and keen intellects toward securing justice for society’s underdogs.

LEVERAGE, which is executive-produced by Dean Devlin (Independence Day, TNT’s The Librarian movies) and creators John Rogers (Transformers) and Chris Downey (The King of Queens), scored big in its first season, ranking as ad-supported cable’s #1 show in its timeslot with an average of 3.9 million viewers.  The second season has averaged 4.4 million viewers.

I have loved this show ever since it began! Check it out Sundays at 9/8c and enjoy the ride! Visit the TNT Leverage site to see Sneak Peaks, view full episodes, and watch Behind the Scenes Videos.

Review and Giveaway: Friday Night Lights Volume 2 TV Soundtrack

I'm a big football-lovin-gal. I mean really! My team is the Pittsburgh Steelers since that's my hometown (no haters allowed!) Since I love football so much, I tend to watch alot of football-related items, including Friday Night Lights.

As a big fan of music also, I was thrilled when I was asked to review the Friday Night Lights Volume 2 TV Soundtrack. With one of my favorite artists, Jakob Dylan, on the soundtrack, as well as White Rabbits, Augustana, Band of Skulls, and more, I was definitely interested in checking out this CD!

Friday Night Lights Soundtrack Volume 2 demonstrates how TV Shows and the Music Supervisors responsible for their musical direction and tone have their fingers directly on the music pulse. Due out May 4th, the record features music played last season on FNL and showcases some of the biggest break out bands of the past year, including White Rabbits, Band of Skulls and Avett Brothers. Spawning from the best-selling book and hit feature film Varsity Blues, Friday Night Lights is an award-winning television show centering on life in Dillon, TX where football is not only king but also the central and cohesive force in the community. The new season of Friday Night Lights premieres Friday, May 7th at 8/7c and airs Fridays at 8/7c on NBC.

Track Listing:

1. Percussion Gun by White Rabbits
2. Sway by Heartless Bastards
3. Killed Myself When I Was Young by A.A. Bondy
4. Fire by Augustana
5. Something Good This Way Comes by Jakob Dylan
6. I Know What I Am by Band of Skulls
7. The Meanest Man in the World by John Doe
8. If It's The Beaches The Avett Brothers
9. What You Hide by AM
10. Come Thou Fount of Every Blessing by Sufjan Stevens
11. This is the Thing by Fink
12. FNL Main Title by Snuffy Walden

This soundtrack was released on May 18, 2010 and can be bought at Amazon at the following link: Friday Night Lights Vol. 2 (Original Television Soundtrack).

My favorite song on this Soundtrack is Jakob Dylan's song but I hope you will like this soundtrack as much as I did!
