Review and Giveaway: Smart Balance™ Omega-3 Grade A Natural Large Eggs
Tuesday, September 28, 2010
September is Better Breakfast Month and in conjunction with this "event", I'm sharing some info I received about Smart Balance™ Omega-3 Grade A Natural Large Eggs, as well as a recipe I tried.
I was contacted back in August for this, and was sent four coupons to try out Smart Balance Omega-3 Natural Eggs. Even though I don't always eat the best, I really have been striving to eat better and feed my children healthier foods. One way to do this is with eggs.
Eggs get a lot of bad rap for their cholesterol content, but just like everything else, everything in moderation is key. Eggs are a simple way to get protein, vitamins, and Omega-3s.
About Smart Balance Omega-3 Grade A Natural Large Eggs
- 70mg of DHA Omega-3 and 180mg of ALA Omega-3 per serving.
- 25% less saturated fat than regular eggs (1g versus 1.5g, rounded)
- Hens are fed a 100% vegetarian diet
- 2 eggs provide 384mg of the nutrients DHA/ALA Omega-3s combined
- Good source of Vitamins E, D & AOver 400% more total Omega-3’s than a regular eggThe hens are also raised without antibiotics or growth hormones, as well as never fed any kind of animal by-products. Another great thing that I love is that the eggs are packaged in 100% recycled &
environmentally friendly materials!
Here's the recipe that we tried that I want to share with you:
Healthy Heart Banana Muffins
Ingredients: 3 very ripe bananas
1 stick Smart Balance 50/50 butter blends original
1 cup white sugar OR 1/2 cup sugar and 1/2 cup sugar substitute
1 Large egg or 2 egg whites
1 tsp vanilla extract
1 Tbs Smart Balance oil
1/2 tsp salt
1 tsp baking soda
1 - 2 tsp cinnamon (optional!)
2 Cups white flour OR 1 cup white flour and 1 cup whole wheat flour
1/4 cup chopped walnuts (optional)
1 stick Smart Balance 50/50 butter blends original
1 cup white sugar OR 1/2 cup sugar and 1/2 cup sugar substitute
1 Large egg or 2 egg whites
1 tsp vanilla extract
1 Tbs Smart Balance oil
1/2 tsp salt
1 tsp baking soda
1 - 2 tsp cinnamon (optional!)
2 Cups white flour OR 1 cup white flour and 1 cup whole wheat flour
1/4 cup chopped walnuts (optional)
Prep Time: 15 mins
Cook Time: 15-20 for muffins
Yield/Notes: 12 muffins or 6 jumbo muffins, 1 loaf of bread
STEP 1: | |
| Preheat oven to 425 degrees F for muffins, or 350 for bread. | |
| |
STEP 2: | |
| Line muffin pan with 12 muffins liners, or make 6 jumbo muffins, or lightly grease muffin pan or large bread pan with Smart Balance oil (use paper towel to spread light layer) | |
| |
STEP 3: | |
| In large bowl, combine 2 cups of flour, 1/2 tsp salt, 1 tsp baking soda, and, if desired, cinnamon. Whisk together lightly and set aside. | |
| |
STEP 4: | |
| Mash the 3 large ripe bananas (can use 4 if bananas are small or for extra banana flavor!) and set aside. | |
| |
STEP 5: | |
| In separate bowl, cream room temperature stick of Smart Balance butter blends and 1 cup of sugar. | |
| |
STEP 6: | |
| Add egg to butter/sugar and beat well. | |
| |
STEP 7: | |
| Add mashed bananas, 1 tsp vanilla extract, 1 Tbs Smart Balance oil, and mix well. | |
| |
STEP 8: | |
| Slowly stir in flour mixture and walnuts (if desired) until moistened. Don't over mix. | |
| |
STEP 9: | |
| Pour or spoon batter into muffin pan or loaf pan. Can sprinkle extra walnuts and/or cinnamon on top. | |
| |
STEP 10: | |
| Bake muffins at 425 for 15-20 minutes, depending on size of muffins. Use a toothpick to monitor... when toothpick inserted into middle of muffin comes out clean, they're done! For banana bread, bake in loaf pan at 350 for about 50-60 minutes | |
| |
STEP 11: | |
| Remove from oven and allow to cool before removing from pan. Spread your favorite Smart Balance buttery spread on top, or Smart Balance buttery spray, and enjoy! ---------------------------------------------------------------------------- Yum! My kids and I both enjoyed these muffins and I think that your family will too! We really enjoy scrambled eggs with cheese in the mornings and these eggs are great! Great tasting - great quality - and tons of healthy benefits! Would you like to try some Smart Balance eggs?! One lucky reader will one a month's supply of eggs. We use healthy oils in our breakfasts like Olive Oil. Eggs are a part of our morning meals too; as an ingredient or as part of the main meal. I also use honey in place of syrups. Thanks!

I try to get them to eat a more healthy breakfast by having options for them...fruit, oatmeal, eggs, pancakes. I also always have orange juice or V-8 in the fridge. Thanks for the review and for sharing the recipe!

I make sure that I get my dose of omega 3's in the mornings, good for brain function. I sprinkle flaxseeds in my breakfast smoothies or oatmeal. I also cook with omega enriched oils and butters.

Making time to sit down and eat breakfast helps us eat healthier. Slowing down makes us think about what we're eating.

Thank goodness there are a lot of choices out there. I think one way to eat healthier period is to become familiar with and use products such as these eggs that have healthier components. There's no reason to sacrifice flavor anymore for things that are good for us.
